Check the die and mat before choosing a fabric cutter

Check the cutter’s model

Identify the exact machine you own or plan to buy. The GO!, GO! Me and GO! Big can all use some of the same boards, but a model that accepts a compact board may reject a wider one. Look for the die item number in the maker’s fit chart and confirm the exact column for your machine. For Studio, the chart notes GO! die adapters. Read the adapter requirement for that board instead of relying on the word “compatible” by itself.

Read the contents before ordering

Check whether the listing is a machine starter set, a die, a mat or a companion bundle. The hand-crank 55100H kit includes the machine, value die and 6 × 12-inch mat. The 55684 strip die fits the 55112 mat but is sold as the die. The mat is a separate item if you buy that die on its own and do not have a compatible mat.

Match the shape to the pattern

Check the raw shape and the seam allowance before selecting a die by name. Match a set like a Qube to the finished block system your pattern calls for. A companion bundle is designed to add shapes to a system, so check whether it includes the shapes needed to start the pattern. Where the exact cutting width, layer limit or fabric is central to your project, use the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation.

Guide questions

Does the right board size mean that my machine can use it?

Read the machine column in the chart as well as the dimensions. The chart is the direct compatibility check.

Why does a kit list two square sizes?

The starter value die cuts two different raw squares. Each loses seam allowance when sewn. Use the pattern’s raw or finished convention consistently.

Can I use the same mat for every die?

Use the mat item number named for the die. A larger mat in your cupboard is not automatically the maker’s specified match.
