Strip and binding dies

Choose by the raw width, number of cuts per pass and the kind of binding you plan to make. A plain strip die cuts repeated lengths at a specified width. A scrappy binding die cuts shorter segments. A flange binding die prepares widths you join to show a contrast line.

Choosing strip and binding dies

Match machine and board independently.

Two dies that both cut 2½-inch strips can use different board lengths and widths. The 55017 three-strip die uses a 10 × 24-inch board. The compact 55684 uses a 6 × 12-inch board and a different mat.

Use the correct size convention.

A 2½-inch raw strip can finish at 2 inches if quarter-inch seams are taken on both sides. Use the number appropriate to the step shown in your pattern.

Department questions

Which size matters when buying the mat?

Check the die item number and the mat number the maker assigns to it.

Will a flange die sew the contrast line?

It cuts the fabric widths. You join and fold them using the binding directions.

Should I use a three-strip die on a compact machine?

Check that exact item in the manufacturer’s compatibility chart. The board size determines whether it fits.
